PLAYER PATHWAY
At Missoula Surf, our Player Pathway is designed to inspire a lifelong love of the game, develop complete athletes, and create meaningful opportunities for players who are ready to dream big, work hard, and grow through the game of soccer.
Our pathway is more than a series of teams or age groups. It is a connected journey built to meet players where they are and help guide them toward where they want to go. From a player’s first touch on the ball to the pursuit of elite competition, Missoula Surf is committed to creating an environment where athletes feel supported, challenged, encouraged, and inspired.
The journey begins with Surf Juniors, where young players build confidence, athletic movement, coordination, creativity, and a strong connection to the game. From there, players enter our competitive team pathway, beginning at U9 and continuing through U18, where they are guided through year-round development and surrounded by coaches, teammates, and opportunities that help them grow both on and off the field.
We believe soccer is more than a game. Through competitive environments, quality training, meaningful team experiences, and access to expanded opportunities, our players develop technical skill, tactical understanding, resilience, leadership, accountability, and life lessons that carry far beyond the field.
At every stage, our goal is to help players love the game, compete with purpose, and discover what is possible through commitment, courage, and belief.
SURF JUNIORS
Building the Foundation • Inspiring the Love of the Game • Creating the First Wave of Development
Surf Juniors is where the Missoula Surf journey begins. This stage is built around joy, energy, movement, and connection. Our youngest players are introduced to the game in a positive and encouraging environment that helps them fall in love with soccer while building the athletic foundation needed for long-term growth.
Through fun, movement-based training, players develop balance, agility, coordination, body control, confidence, creativity, and comfort with the ball. Sessions are designed to help players explore the game, build friendships, and develop a strong connection to the field, their teammates, and the Missoula Surf community.
At Surf Juniors, development begins with excitement. We want players to leave each session smiling, growing, and eager to come back. This first stage of the pathway helps create the foundation for future success by encouraging players to move well, think creatively, compete with joy, and develop a passion for soccer from their very first wave.
SURF COMPETITIVE TEAMS

Our Surf Competitive Teams begin at U9 and continue through U18, guiding players through a complete development pathway designed to grow both the player and the person. This stage of the pathway introduces players to a more structured training and team environment while continuing to prioritize long-term growth, confidence, and love for the game.
From U9–U11, our focus is on year-round development, technical skill, creativity, confidence, and building a lasting connection to soccer. These ages are an important foundation for the future. Players are encouraged to be brave on the ball, solve problems, make decisions, compete, and learn the habits that will help them grow as athletes and teammates.
As players continue through the pathway, the level of challenge grows with them. We believe athletes are competitors, and we strive to place players in “Best of the Best” environments where they can be stretched, motivated, and inspired. Through competitive games, purposeful training sessions, quality coaching, and meaningful development experiences, players continue to sharpen the technical, tactical, physical, and mental parts of the game.
Our competitive pathway is built to help players understand what it means to train with intent, compete with courage, respond to adversity, and take ownership of their development. Players learn how to be part of something bigger than themselves while also discovering their own strengths, goals, and potential.
These lessons transfer far beyond soccer. Through competition, commitment, adversity, teamwork, discipline, and accountability, players develop resilience, leadership, confidence, and the tools to succeed in life.
SURF SELECT
Connecting Top Talent • Expanding Opportunities • Competing on the National Stage
Surf Select provides Missoula Surf players with an exciting opportunity to connect with the larger Surf Nation and compete alongside top talent from across the country. This layer of the pathway allows motivated players to experience high-level environments that challenge their development, expand their confidence, and open doors to new possibilities.
Through elite tournaments, national showcases, regional opportunities, and international experiences, Surf Select gives players the chance to test themselves in competitive settings beyond their local team environment. These experiences help players understand the speed, intensity, and standards of higher-level soccer while also building relationships within the broader Surf community.
For players who are driven to pursue the next level, Surf Select can become an important part of their development journey. It provides exposure, inspiration, and a greater sense of what is possible when hard work, commitment, and opportunity come together.
SURF PARTNERSHIPS

Through the strength of the Surf Network and our relationships with other regional clubs, Missoula Surf is committed to creating pathways for guest play and Designated Player opportunities with ECNL and MLS NEXT programs. These partnerships are an important part of how we support players who are striving to compete at the highest levels.
Our goal is to provide the “Best of the Best” pathway for players who want to challenge themselves in elite soccer environments. In our remote area, clubs are not always able to provide a direct platform into the biggest leagues in the nation. Missoula Surf is dedicated to helping bridge that gap by creating access, building relationships, and opening doors for committed players who are prepared to grow, compete, and pursue the next level.
Guest play and Designated Player opportunities allow players to experience higher-level competition, different team environments, and expanded exposure while continuing to stay connected to their Missoula Surf home. These opportunities are designed for players who demonstrate commitment, readiness, coachability, and the desire to keep pushing their development forward.
At Missoula Surf, we believe geography should not limit ambition. We are committed to helping players from our community access meaningful opportunities and connect with pathways that support their goals.

Every player’s journey is unique. Some players may dream of playing college soccer. Others may pursue semi-professional opportunities, MLS Academy environments, professional trials, or simply a lifelong relationship with the game. No matter where the journey leads, Missoula Surf is committed to supporting each athlete with guidance, mentorship, belief, and access to meaningful opportunities.
Our role is to help players and families understand the pathway, prepare for the next step, and continue growing with purpose. We want our athletes to feel seen, supported, and challenged throughout their development. That support includes helping players build strong habits, understand expectations, navigate opportunities, and develop the confidence to pursue their goals.
